June of 2023 I had the privilege of going on the Jamaican Relief Ministry Youth Trip with my son Wright. Multiple opportunities had been given to me to take mission trips but I always let the fear factor take over. I didn't want to leave my kids or I didn't have the time or basically I'm a homebody! But, when my son approached me about wanting to go I couldn't say no. Our week in Jamaica was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. First of all, it is absolutely breathtaking in Jamaica. Our accommodations at JRM were clean, nice and safe. (which eased this Mama's heart!) During our week we were able to attend a church service, visit several preschools, and a school for the deaf and blind. Being a teacher and having a teacher's heart this was right where I needed to be! The dedication these teachers have to serving these children was extraordinary. Most had taught in the same building for over 25 years. Some of the ladies had taught 40+ years in the same school setting. These ladies had a passion for helping the children of Jamaica and these children knew and respected it. Our visit to the School for the Deaf and Blind was probably the most impressionable on our youth. Being able to interact with same-aged peers was fun to watch as our youth interacted and communicated with those students. Visiting Jamaica with LifePoint changed me. It allowed me to have an open heart for serving others and doing God's will when I had previously preferred staying put. I am going to Jamaica again this summer but this time with my youngest daughter. I am excited to show her what serving in Jamaica looks like and how we are called to share God's love with others.
