I had never been out of the country except on a cruise. I had heard a lot about Amigos for Christ but had never thought about going on a trip to Nicaragua. The Leadership team at LifePoint decided to visit Amigos for Christ to learn what makes them so successful and how we could use those same principles to facilitate change within our own community. Since I am on the leadership team and didn’t want to be the only member not to go, I signed up. I am so glad I did.
We climbed a volcano, visited Amigos Academy (a school of 200 students in pre-k through 6th grade), visited a hog farm, and shared meals with families in their homes in rural Nicaragua. We also spent an afternoon with the Amigos for Christ Baseball academy which is leading to another mission trip opportunity for me in June 2024.
Talking with families whose lives have been transformed through education, clean water, and economic development, it became clear that Amigos had built strong relationships with all of these people. You could hear and see the trust and respect that they had for each other.
Juntos means working together. From climbing a volcano to Monday celebrations in the rancho with all of Amigos employees, everything is done together. By working together, Amigos helps to transform people, families and communities.
The country of Nicaragua is beautiful and so are the people. It was obvious to me that Amigos is successful because everything they do begins with building relationships. That is what the Leadership team learned during our trip to Nicaragua. In order to bring transformation to our community, we need to begin by working side-by-side with our neighbors, building trust and respect.
I look forward to my next trip to Nicaragua in June and working with the Amigos for Christ Baseball Academy.
