Our LifePoint Team spent several days in the community of Manzano 2, helping families build bathrooms and associated septic tanks. The families currently have clean water, but still have open pit latrines which contribute to many health issues. Four of us from LifePoint worked with Luis and Jering Gutierrez, a young couple that have two daughters. They were very much looking forward to have a modern bathroom that includes a sink, flush toilet and shower.
One of the young Nicaraguan students who volunteered with Amigos and worked with us in the community was named Alessandro. He is 17 years old, grew up in a community called Chonco, which was one of the early communities that Amigos worked with many years ago. I told him that I had worked there on the water system and on construction of bathrooms and when he told me his father's name (Abram), it turned out that I had worked with him on bathrooms as he was the lead mason on those projects - about 15 years ago. In fact, during our visit to the Amigos Academy during the week, I met with his dad who is now the construction manager on the expansion of the Academy.
It struck me that ~15 years ago, the people in Chonco did not have access to clean water or a real bathroom and through their efforts alongside Amigos for Christ, Alessandro and many other children had grown up with both! Alessandro is a young leader and a blessing to the future of his community; I have included a picture of him with a pinata that the kids played with on our last day.
